PORTRAIT OF JOHN UPCOTT, Guardian 1950-62
The portrait, of which this is part, hangs in the College Refectory.
John Upcott was born in 1890 and was a Lay Guardian from 1952 to 1960.
It was painted in 1943, not long before he retired from Eton. Perhaps they commissioned it and he later presented it to the Shrine. His descendants knew of the portrait but not the artist or its provenance.
The artist was Olive Constance Snell, a well-known society painter of the early twentieth century. We have so far failed to find her copyright holder and would be grateful for that information.
